About us

About CMC Chesapeake Masonry

CMC Chesapeake Masonry is a masonry contractor based in Chesapeake, Virginia. We repair, restore and build brick, block and stone for homeowners and commercial property owners in Chesapeake and six neighboring Hampton Roads cities. We’re licensed, insured and bonded, and every project starts with a free estimate.

How We Approach Masonry Work

Masonry problems rarely come one at a time. A chimney that leaks may need crown work, new flashing at the roof line and repointing all at once. A damp foundation wall can involve the mortar, the brick and the grade outside. That is why we cover the full range of masonry work ourselves: tuckpointing and repointing, brick, block and stone repair, restoration of older masonry, chimney repair including flashing and liners, brick veneer repair and installation, retaining walls, new brickwork and stonework, and masonry cleaning. Having one company for all of it means you aren’t coordinating separate trades.

Every project starts with a free estimate. When a job needs a permit, retaining walls and new structures among them, we handle the application.

If you want to understand the difference between fixing localized damage and restoring a whole structure, our pages on masonry and brick repair and masonry restoration lay it out.

How to Check Any Virginia Contractor

Whoever you hire for masonry work, these checks take minutes and are worth doing before you sign anything.

Look Up the License

Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) runs a free License Lookup that shows a contractor’s license record, including any disciplinary history. Licenses are issued to a specific business, so search for the exact company name that appears on your estimate.

Understand the Class and Specialty

Virginia contractor licenses come in three classes, A, B and C, based on the size of individual projects and on a contractor’s yearly volume of work. Under the current definitions in Code of Virginia §54.1-1100, the project size dividing lines between the classes are $30,000 and $150,000, and annual volume is tested separately. Class tells you the size of jobs a contractor may take on. It is not a rating of workmanship.

Licenses also carry classifications or specialties that describe the type of work. The Board for Contractors’ regulations define a masonry specialty, abbreviated BRK (18VAC50-22-30), and some broader building contractor classifications can also cover masonry. If you want to know whether a license covers your job, the DPOR Board for Contractors explains how classes and classifications differ.

Get It in Writing and Ask About Insurance

DPOR’s Consumer Guide to Choosing a Contractor recommends written estimates and contracts and offers precautions about payments. It is worth reading before any larger project. A license record does not confirm that a contractor carries insurance, so ask for proof of coverage directly.
